70 years ago today my parents got married at a Justice of the Peace in Kittery, Maine…..
Peggy was a new mom, having given birth to my oldest sibling, – my sister Linda. Bob was just ending his service as a Merchant Marine.
Just a year earlier my dad was in the Pacific – unmarried and unaware he was going to be a father….
Upon my father’s return to Massachusetts after the war, my Dad was greeted by his father who immediately brought my father to my father, who upon seeing his 7 month old daughter, sheepishly said, “I guess we should get married.”
Bumpy, my mother’s father, had put my mother through a small degree of hell. An unmarried girl of 17 in 1944. She was not my grandfather’s favorite child. My grandmother was the soul of patience and seemed to be the only person who could temper her husband’s anger.
My Mom was shipped off to relatives in upstate New York to have the baby…. which she does in December of 1945…..
Their marriage was a bit “shotgun” in nature…
If was a fits and starts beginning to what might not have ever happened had my Mom not crawled out her bedroom window to go to the USO….
(and the reason my grandmother could always quiet my grandfather…? Seems he married my grandmother…. at a Justice of the Peace…. in Kittery, Maine…. several months after the birth of their first child – my mother….)
