Happy Birthday to my youngest siblings, the twins, Lanny and Lisa. As many know, there was/might have been (it is a subject of great debate of late) a baby sweater – with a large letter “L” on it – made for and worn by each of the Blais siblings. First Linda, then Larry, Lance, Lauren, Lee, me, Luke, then Lanny then…. Lisa…. wait a minute. Twins, but only one sweater….. what to do, what to do…. I‘ve been told there was talk of naming only one of the twins with an “L’ name. I’m thinking that would be have resulted in years on the therapist’s couch.
The oddest thing about this story is, though it is a story that all my siblings tell/told, Lanny, who was my mother’s sole guardian through the last years of her life, has been through all my mother’s possessions, hasn’t found it amongst the piles of old baby clothes my mother kept. He & I have gone through all the photograph albums. I’ve asked everyone I can …. And yet, I’ve found no evidence that this “L” sweater ever existed.
This is why I needed to write “The Boy on the Bureau”. It helped me get nearer to a “truthier” truth.
Lanny’s full name is Landon Michael Blais. Lisa’s is Lisa Maria Blais. they are named after respectively, my mother’s favorite actor on Bonanza (Michael Landon) and Lisa Marie Presley (my mother thought it was Marie, not Maria).
Lanny is the sibling with whom I am the closest – though that took years to come to pass as he heard most of the venom she she reserved for me. I haven’t spoken to Lisa in well over 20 years.
